India just made a serious move.

The Union Budget 2026–27 announced a 20-year tax carve-out for foreign cloud companies using data centres in India, alongside a 15% safe-harbour margin for investors routing Indian-user revenues through local resellers.

This isn’t an incremental policy; it’s a structural invitation to the world’s biggest compute players to plant roots here.

The response was already underway before the ink dried. ~$70 billion in data centre investments is in motion, including Google’s 1 GW AI data centre in Andhra Pradesh. India now hosts 275 data centres across 33 markets, with around 50 in Tier-2 cities — a number expected to more than double this decade.

01 This Is More Than Storage

Data centres are frequently misunderstood as glorified warehouses for servers. That framing is increasingly outdated. Today, they are the compute backbone for AI, quantum computing, and deep tech. Every large language model, every autonomous system, every real-time analytics platform runs on physical infrastructure housed in these facilities.

AI progress, at its core, is compute-limited not idea-limited. India’s ability to participate meaningfully in the global AI economy depends on how much of that compute it can host, manage, and build natively.

02 The Employment Multiplier Nobody Is Talking About

Industry benchmarks suggest 15–25% year-on-year growth in direct data centre employment over the next several years. But the real story is the multiplier. Each direct data centre role generates an estimated 500–700% growth in indirect employment across construction, EPC, power, logistics, telecom, cloud, cybersecurity, and sustainability.

These aren’t abstract projections. They show up in hiring pipelines for electrical engineers, HVAC specialists, GPU infrastructure professionals, and cloud orchestration experts, roles that are already in short supply globally.

03 The Talent Gap Is the Real Constraint

58% of data centre operators globally already struggle to find qualified talent. India’s rapid expansion will intensify that pressure domestically unless talent readiness keeps pace with infrastructure investment.

The specialisations in demand are highly technical and not yet part of mainstream engineering curricula:

The institutions, training pipelines, and hiring frameworks to fill these roles at scale don’t yet exist in India in sufficient depth. That gap is both a risk and an opportunity for those who move early.

04 Tier-2 India Is in the Game

Perhaps the most underreported dimension of this shift: roughly 50 of India’s 275 data centres are already in Tier-2 cities, and that number is expected to more than double this decade. This geographic spread matters enormously for job creation and for the kind of regional economic development that doesn’t get captured in metro-centric GDP figures.

Cities like Coimbatore, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, and Indore are entering the conversation not just as back-office hubs but as legitimate nodes in India’s digital infrastructure. That changes what talent development looks like and where it needs to happen.

Budget 2026–27 has laid a credible foundation. The 20-year tax horizon signals intent. The $70B pipeline signals momentum. The 4,500 MW capacity target by 2030 signals scale.

But infrastructure without talent is just expensive real estate. The real test, as always, is execution: how quickly India can build the workforce that makes these facilities not just operational, but world-class.
